GlobalFoundries’ Malta campus won a CHIPS award of up to $1.6 billion for new 300mm capacity and advanced packaging. Fab 8 already runs FD-SOI, FinFET, RF-SOI, and silicon photonics on Stonebreak Road in Luther Forest. About 2,500 people. About 400,000 wafers a year.
Robot motor drivers, radar, and defense silicon come off this line. Silicon photonics is the expansion bet - packing and a second fab on the same campus, not a greenfield in another state.
Leading-edge logic gets the headlines. Malta is the US 300mm floor for the chips that are not a phone SoC and still have to be made here.
